This “accident” in the process of making things was very well put in David Sylvester’s book (The Brutality of Fact) when he interviewed Francis Bacon about his work: Francis Bacon talked very coherently about this unknown, unexpected bizarre outcome where an umbrella might turn into a crow that might turn into a Pope!

 

A recent theme of mine has been creatures from under the sea, particularly octopus and their tendrils, and I am sure my fear of the sea helps these dark, scary images or flashbacks come out."
